is John R. Marek, I am 6 feet tall, 200 lbs W/M and I've been on the
row
since '84. Though I've made some bad decisions in my life,
I'm by no means a bad person. I'm pretty much alone in the world,
having been bounced from one foster home after another while I grew up
in Fort
Worth, Texas. I'm 38 years old, DOB is 9-17-61. I'm
a positive person most of the time, but finding it tough to remain that

! My name is John Christopher Marquard, though most call me
J.C. I'm currently on Florida's Death Row, my case is pending
appeals. Due to issues of a sensitive nature, and being advised
by counsel, I am unable to discuss the details of my case with
anyone. However, I can say
that my issues are strong ones and I am hopeful (if not
confident) that I'll win a new trial in which, if I do not win my
freedom immediately I will at least see a time when I will be free in
the future. Anyhow, life on death row is very lonely.
I am a single widower, father of one child - a daughter born May 20,
1991, who was adopted out by her mother, I have never seen even a photo
of her. To say she is in my thoughts daily is not even
close. Hopefully, someday I'll find her or she me. I keep a
journal of letters and of thoughts and emotions for her just
in case. Something to let her know how I love her even if I was
not
there for her. Truly one of my deepest regrets in my life.
I've
been incarcerated since November 17th, 1991. I have no open lines
of communication with my family - other than the occasional message,
like
telling me when one of my people dies. My father doesn't
acknowledge me ...my sister never writes...I have no friends who write
or visit me, except
for a catholic Bishop I've known for 13 years, and then that's
infrequent as he is much busy with his duties. I am 32 yrs old, 6
ft. tall, 166 lbs, have brown hair, hazel green eyes. I am very
open minded, an outgoing person with a very friendly yet strong
personality. I am seeking honest and loyal friendships. I
enjoy meeting people, getting to know them for who they are. No
need for pretenses with me. I welcome to
listen to your thoughts and opinions about anything. I like to
consider
myself a thoughtful and understanding listener and confidant. One
you can always turn to when you're in need of a good friend to hear you
out. I also enjoy intellectually stimulating conversation,

old.I'm a Father and a Grandfather. I enjoy reading, I like to read
literature that teaches me something. I love children, I believe they
are our most precious resource. It is for that very reason that my
heart grieves at the direction humanity is heading. I just can't see
why any child should ever be hungry or lack the opportunity to be
educated. The ache of my soul goes even further when I hear of whole
nations are living in sub human condition; where anyone is seen as less
valuable than another. I am struggling to understand how anyone can
look at another person and see not a fellow human ,but just the color
of their skin, or what religious or political views that person may
have, or determine that persons worth by their financial status. I
could be wrong, and please feel free to correct me, but I believe that
being human is a right we all recieve at birth and retain til death.
And I also believe that by that birthright we are all entitled to live
our lives free of suppression. I am a Wiccan and our golden rule is
"And it harm none, do what you will." .....Well there I go letting my thoughts roam
freely. Anyway back to telling you who I am. I enjoy nature, growing
things, all types of animals. I would say horses, dogs and birds are my
favourites. As I mentioned I am following a spiritual path that
embraces the Wicca way as the true way. I am trying to grow in my
spiritual beliefs but it is hard here because there is not much help
for someone who has chosen a spiritual path off the mainstream. But I
don't let that stop me. I have a penpal that understands that even tho

years. For a long time I didn't want to write any pen pals, because I know how
difficult this kind of time can be - not just on the person in
prison, but also on anyone
who cares about me. Because I'm on death row I know every
negative legal decision inches me closer to the
end, and this isn't easy to accept; and it was for this very reason
that
I didn't want to allow anyone to become attached to me . What finally
changed
my mind is all of these years in a cage. I cannot describe adequately how lonely
this time has been. My family lives in Cuba, and I have no one
over
here. I try to make the most of things by bettering myself both mentally
and
physically - and of course I have other hobbies, but most aren't practical
because I'm locked up. I'm looking for a friend who understands
that I'm on Death Row, and that I cannot guarantee that I will be legally
victorious, someone
who is sure they can deal with such a situation, without letting it
get them down - as I do not want to burden anyone. I am looking
for a person who is open minded, who will judge me for who I am, not where I
am. If you are such a person, then I would truly love to
hear from you - and if
your friendship can help ease this loneliness, you will find in me a
person who will care
about you forever.

LIFE ON FLORIDA'S DEATH

In
reality, Florida has three Death Rows. Fifty-four condemned men are
housed in a special wing at Florida State Prison near Starke. The
remaining
320 men are incarcerated in a building at Union Correctional
Institution
in nearby Raiford. The six women on Death Row
are
at Broward Correctional Institution near Pembroke Pines.
Executions
are conducted at Florida State Prison.
Here are some other facts:
* The cells: A day-to-day cell on Death Row measures 6 feet wide
by 9 feet long by 9.5
feet high; the
death-watch cell, where an inmate is placed once the governor
signs
a death warrant, measures 12 feet by 7 feet wide by 8.5 feet
* Meals: Three a day served on trays at 5 a.m., 10:30-11 a.m.
and 4-4:30
* Exercise: Twice a week for two hours in exercise yard.
* Visitors: Allowed weekends from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., unless
visitor lives more than 200
miles away, then visitor can visit both Saturday and Sunday.
* Showers: One every other day.
* Clothing: Orange T-shirts and blue pants.
* Entertainment: Inmates can have a black & white TV --
no cable -- radios, snacks and
cigarettes in
their cells. They receive mail every day except holidays and
weekends. Church services available on closed-circuit television.
* Security: Inmates are escorted everywhere in handcuffs and many
times in shackles.
