FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Canadian Coalition Against The Death Penalty Announces Tourist Boycott Of Texas

Toronto, ON, Canada, December 5, 1998—

The Canadian Coalition Against the Death Penalty today announced an International  tourist boycott of Texas which will commence December 11, 1998, should the execution of Canadian Citizen Joseph Stanley Faulder go forward as scheduled on December 10th, (the 50th anniversary of the
signing of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights.)

Not only do we question the conviction itself, but we are especially outraged at the blatant disregard the state of Texas has shown for its international obligations under the Vienna Convention.   For fifteen years, the Canadian Government was not aware that a Canadian citizen sat under sentence of death in Texas.   This is not the first time that Texas and Governor George Bush Jr. have ignored international agreements to which the United States is signatory.

Governor Bush is often spoken of as a possible presidential candidate.  We are concerned that he would  exhibit the same lack of concern for international treaties and agreements should he ever become President.

The Canadian Coalition Against the Death Penalty  calls upon all of those in the international community who are concerned with Texas' violation of human rights and international agreements  to join us in keeping their tourist dollars out of Texas.
