The only Canadian on Death Row in the U.S.

Ronald Smith - Death Row, Montana

On November 1, 2007 Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day announced the reversal of Canada's long standing policy by the
Conservative Harper
Government to no longer advocate for clemency on behalf of Canadian's sentenced to death in the U.S.

On April 8, 2009 Justice Robert Barnes of the Federal Court of Canada condemned Prime Minister Harper and other senior officials
for arbitrarily stitching together a revamped stand on clemency that reversed long-standing policy, effectively abandoning
Mr. Smith to be executed. Judge Barnes said that fundamental fairness dictates that Canada move quickly to exert its diplomatic
influence to stave off Mr. Smith's impending execution and pave the way for his possible transfer to a prison in Canada.

Canadian officials have recently made agreements with Washington to repatriate Canadian Omar Khadr from Guantanamo Bay
after his conviction on terrorism and war crimes charges, even though he was never under sentence of death, however,
to date Canadian officials have yet to secure the transfer of Ronald Smith, despite the federal court order to do so !

CANADA'S CONSERVATIVE GOVERNMENT ABANDONS ABOLITIONIST STANCE ?

The Government of Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper has
turned its back on Canada's traditional role on the world stage.

everyone of us in this society is demeaned by it. "

I have become aware of Jimmy's case and hope to help

Jimmy and his supporters find justice in this case. "

These prisoners originally wrote the CCADP when
they were still on death row seeking assistance.

Since then, many of them have been exonerated and released,
with many more have been re-sentenced to a lesser sentence !

News About the Court Injunction Against HB2376
Arizona tried to ban prisoners from communication with people through third parties over the internet.

The CCADP filed suit against the state, and had the legislation thrown out as unconstitutional.
A Federal Judge ruled that banning our webpages would cause "irreparable harm to the First Amendment."

AMERICAN ABOLITIONISTS ABANDON MUMIA ABU JAMAL ?

At the recent 4th World Congress Against The Death Penalty The Texas Coalition To Abolish The Death Penalty, Death Penalty Focus, and Murder Victim Families for Human Rights amongst others, endorsed a secret agreement to no longer support Death Row Prisoner and Activist Mumia Abu Jamal under political pressure from The Fraternal Order of Police.
"...to protect our vital alliances with our key partners and constituencies" - (From secret memo dated December 2009, see links below for more information on the incident)
Throwing Mumia Abu-Jamal Under the Bus  |  Read the whole secret memo
The CCADP no longer supports those organizations or their work as legitimate and encourages other abolitionists to not support them either. As abolitionists, we support the commutation of Mumia's sentence regardless of issues surrounding his guilt or innocence, political pressure, or concern about what the Fraternal Order of Police might think !
